Free vs Donation Tier Comparison Guide

Free vs Donation Tier Comparison Guide

FreeMcHosting operates both a 100% free community tier and a supporter-backed donation tier. All nodes across both tiers are completely self-hosted and operated directly by our team.

FreeMcHosting runs entirely on a nonprofit basis. We put our resources into providing free Minecraft servers, helping more people build, explore and connect.

Understanding the architectural and hardware differences helps you select the right hosting environment for your community.

2. Why NL0 Has No IP Banning Capabilities

Because NL0 is a free tier on our self-hosted infrastructure, incoming network connections are routed through a reverse proxy to protect our backend nodes:

  • When a player connects to your NL0 server, Minecraft sees the proxy's IP address rather than the player's residential IP.
  • Executing /ban-ip on NL0 will either block the proxy itself or fail to prevent alternative accounts from connecting.
  • Recommended practice on NL0: Ban offenders by username using /ban <player>, enforce a strict whitelist with /whitelist on, or install an authentication plugin.

On the Donation Tier (UK1), incoming traffic is routed directly. Server administrators can inspect authentic player IP addresses and execute /ban-ip freely to stop persistent griefers.

3. When the Free Community Tier (NL0) is Ideal

The Free Tier (NL0) runs on Dual Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 processors with DDR3 ECC RAM and enterprise SAS storage. It is ideal for:

  • Vanilla, Paper, or Purpur Survival Multiplayer (SMP) servers with 5 to 20 active players.
  • Standard survival worlds running 30 to 40 optimized plugins.
  • Lightweight Fabric modpacks (Cobblemon, Origins, performance suites).
  • Build servers, adventure maps, and testing sandboxes.

Because FreeMcHosting allocates 4 GB of dedicated RAM, your community enjoys genuine Minecraft gameplay without the 1GB limitations common among commercial free hosts.

4. When to Consider the Donation Tier (UK1)

The Donation Tier (UK1) runs on powerful AMD Ryzen 9 3900X processors with fast DDR4 memory and enterprise NVMe SSD storage. It is recommended if your project requires:

  • Heavyweight Forge / NeoForge modpacks containing 150+ complex tech and magic mods (ATM9, Vault Hunters, DawnCraft).
  • Full network-level IP banning capabilities to block griefers and unwanted bots.
  • Large multi-server networks connected via Velocity or BungeeCord.
  • Automated 24/7 continuous runtime without having to visit the credit renewal rewards page.
  • Direct financial support to help keep FreeMcHosting running for everyone worldwide.
