SFTP File Transfer Guide (FileZilla & WinSCP)

SFTP File Transfer Guide

While the built-in dashboard File Manager is convenient for editing configs, uploading large world folders (gigabytes in size) or dozens of mod files is significantly faster and more reliable using an SFTP client such as FileZilla, WinSCP, or Cyberduck.

Locating Your SFTP Credentials

  1. Open your FreeMcHosting dashboard and select your server.
  2. In the navigation sidebar, click Settings (or look for SFTP Details).
  3. Note the following parameters:
  • Connection Address / Host: e.g. nl0.freemchosting.com or 45.13.237.208
  • Port: Often 2022 (SFTP port is different from your Minecraft game port)
  • Username: Your panel username followed by a period and server identifier (e.g. username.a1b2c3d4)
  • Password: Your dashboard account password

Connecting with FileZilla Step-by-Step

1. Download FileZilla Client

Download the free FileZilla Client from the official website.

2. Enter Quickconnect Details

At the top of the FileZilla window:
  • Host: sftp://nl0.freemchosting.com (or sftp://45.13.237.208)
  • Username: Your dashboard SFTP username
  • Password: Your dashboard password
  • Port: 2022 (or your panel's listed SFTP port)

Click Quickconnect.

3. Trust Host Key

When connecting for the first time, an "Unknown host key" prompt will appear. Check the box Always trust this host and click OK.

Managing Server Files via SFTP

  • Local files appear in the left pane (your computer).
  • Remote files appear in the right pane (your Minecraft server root).
  • Drag and drop files or whole folders between the two panes.
  • Tip for Worlds: Always zip your local world folder before uploading, upload the single .zip file, and unarchive it in the dashboard. Uploading thousands of tiny individual chunk files individually is much slower than transferring a single compressed zip.
