Custom Domains and SRV Records

Custom Domains and SRV Records

By default, connecting to a Minecraft server with a non-standard port requires players to type :PORT at the end of the address. You can provide a clean address like play.yourdomain.com by configuring an SRV Record through your DNS provider (such as Cloudflare, Namecheap, or GoDaddy).

Required DNS Records

To route traffic properly, you must configure two DNS records: an A Record pointing to the node IP and an SRV Record directing the game protocol to your assigned port.

Record 1: The Target A Record

FieldValueNotes
TypeAStandard IPv4 mapping
Name / Hostnode (or mc)Results in node.yourdomain.com
IPv4 Address45.13.237.208 (NL0) or 57.128.180.78 (UK1)Your node IP
Proxy StatusDNS Only (Grey Cloud)Do not proxy via Cloudflare

Important: Cloudflare's HTTP proxy (orange cloud) cannot handle raw Minecraft TCP game packets. You must toggle the proxy off (DNS Only) or connections will fail.

Record 2: The Service SRV Record

FieldValueNotes

Service_minecraftStandard Minecraft game service
Protocol_tcpTCP transport protocol
NameplayResults in play.yourdomain.com

Testing Your Domain Setup

DNS propagation typically takes between 2 and 15 minutes. To test your domain:

  1. Open Minecraft Java Edition.
  2. Go to Multiplayer -> Add Server.
  3. In the Server Address field, type play.yourdomain.com (no port number needed).
  4. Connect to your world.
