Server Ports and IP Addresses Explained

Server Ports and IP Addresses Explained

Understanding network addresses, dynamic port allocation, and connection strings is essential for managing your Minecraft server and directing your players properly.

1. How Minecraft IP Addresses Work

A complete Minecraft server connection consists of two pieces of information:

[Node Hostname or IP Address] : [Port Number]
Example: nl0.freemchosting.com:25582
  • IP / Hostname: Represents the physical datacenter server machine where your container runs.
  • Port: Represents the specific virtual door assigned to your unique Minecraft server instance on that machine.

2. FreeMcHosting Nodes and Default Ports

FreeMcHosting operates high-capacity enterprise clusters:

ClusterNode HostnameNode IPv4Java ProtocolBedrock ProtocolTraffic Routing
Free Cluster (NL0)nl0.freemchosting.com45.13.237.208TCPUDPProxied traffic (No IP banning capabilities)
Donation Cluster (UK1)uk1.freemchosting.com57.128.180.78TCPUDPDirect IP routing (Full IP banning capabilities)

Traffic Proxying on NL0: All nodes are self-hosted and operated directly by our team. On NL0 (Free), we proxy traffic through our frontend routing layer, meaning server containers see the proxy IP rather than individual player IPs. This is why NL0 has no IP banning capabilities. UK1 is our donation tier with direct routing allowing full player IP resolution.

FreeMcHosting runs entirely on a nonprofit basis. We put our resources into providing free Minecraft servers, helping more people build, explore and connect.

Why Doesn't Every Server Use Port 25565?

Port 25565 is the default port for Minecraft Java Edition. If a connection address does not specify a port, the Minecraft game client automatically appends :25565. Because hundreds of server containers run simultaneously across datacenter nodes, each server is assigned a distinct dynamic port (for example, 25582 or 26140).

When sharing your server address with friends, you must include the full colon and port number, unless you have configured a custom DNS SRV record.

3. Java vs Bedrock Ports (GeyserMC)

If you enable Bedrock crossplay via GeyserMC:

  • Java Edition (TCP): Connects using your assigned server port (e.g., 25582).
  • Bedrock Edition (UDP): Bedrock clients use the UDP network protocol. In the Geyser config.yml, Bedrock players must be directed to your allocated Bedrock port (often configured to match your primary server port on FreeMcHosting nodes).

4. Why You Never Need Router Port Forwarding

When running a Minecraft server on a personal home computer, you must access your residential router settings to forward external ports through NAT firewalls.

With FreeMcHosting, your server runs inside a commercial datacenter connected to high-bandwidth fiber backbones. Public IP routing, DDoS protection, and port binding are managed automatically. You never need to touch router settings or expose your residential IP address to strangers.
