Dashboard Web File Manager Guide

Dashboard Web File Manager Guide

The FreeMcHosting Dashboard (dash.freemchosting.com) includes an integrated Web File Manager. It allows you to browse directory trees, upload archives, edit configuration files, and manage your server filesystem directly inside your web browser without requiring third-party FTP client software.

1. File Manager Features Overview

The Web File Manager provides full access to your root server directory:

  • In-Browser Text Editor: Edit files such as server.properties, bukkit.yml, and paper-global.yml with syntax highlighting and instant save controls.
  • Archive Extraction & Creation: Upload .zip and .tar.gz packages and extract them directly on the server filesystem.
  • Direct File Uploads: Drag and drop plugin .jar files, world folders, or custom resource packs.
  • File Renaming & Deletion: Rename configuration files or delete obsolete log files to save disk space.
  • Permission Awareness: Subusers can be granted granular file management access without sharing master account credentials.

2. Navigating Key Minecraft Server Directories

When viewing the root folder in the Web File Manager, the primary directories include:

Directory PathDescriptionRecommended Management
/world/Overworld dimension files, level.dat, and playerdataBack up regularly; do not edit .mca files manually
/world_nether/Nether dimension files (on Paper / Purpur servers)Can be deleted to reset the Nether dimension
/world_the_end/The End dimension files (on Paper / Purpur servers)Can be deleted to reset End dragon fights and cities
/plugins/Spigot, Paper, and Purpur plugin .jar files and configsUpload .jar files here; edit generated config folders
/mods/Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge mod .jar filesUpload server-compatible mod files here

/logs/Server execution logs including latest.logCheck for crash stack traces and boot errors
server.propertiesPrimary game configuration fileSet game mode, MOTD, player limits, and PVP rules

3. How to Edit a Configuration File

  1. Navigate to Files in the Dashboard left navigation menu.
  2. Click on the file you wish to modify (for example, server.properties).
  3. Make your desired adjustments in the code editor window.
  4. Click Save File in the bottom right corner.
  5. Restart your server for the changes to take effect.

4. When to Use Web File Manager vs SFTP

  • Use Web File Manager: For editing text configuration files, quickly uploading individual .jar plugins, deleting old crash logs, or unzipping small modpacks.
  • Use SFTP (FileZilla / WinSCP): When transferring large world folders (over 200 MB), downloading complete server backups, or doing bulk uploads of hundreds of individual assets.
