Uploading Custom Worlds and Adventure Maps

Uploading Custom Worlds and Adventure Maps

Learn how to upload existing singleplayer Minecraft worlds, custom builds, or downloaded adventure maps to your FreeMcHosting server.

1. Anatomy of a Minecraft World Folder

Before uploading, ensure your local world folder contains the necessary directory structure:

my_custom_world/
├── level.dat (Crucial: contains world seed, gamerules, and time)
  ├── level.dat_old (Automatic backup of level.dat)
├── region/ (Contains .mca chunk files for the Overworld)
├── data/ (Contains map data, raids, and structures)
  ├── entities/ (Contains entity storage in 1.17+)
├── poi/ (Points of Interest data for villagers and portals)
  ├── DIM-1/ (Nether dimension data in Vanilla/Fabric)
└── DIM1/ (The End dimension data in Vanilla/Fabric)

Paper & Purpur Note: On Paper and Purpur servers, the Nether and End are separated into distinct root directories (world_nether and world_the_end). If uploading a Vanilla world save to Paper, Paper will automatically migrate DIM-1 and DIM1 into their respective folders on first boot.

2. Step-by-Step Upload Instructions

Method A: Uploading via Dashboard Web File Manager (Zip Method)

  1. Compress Your World: On your local computer, open your Minecraft .minecraft/saves directory. Right-click your world folder and create a .zip archive (e.g., custom_world.zip). Ensure the contents are directly inside the zip file.
  2. Stop Your Server: Open the Dashboard Console and click Stop.
  3. Upload to Root: Open the Files manager in the Dashboard and drag custom_world.zip into the root directory.
  4. Extract the Archive: Click the three dots next to the uploaded .zip file and select Unarchive or Extract.
  5. Rename or Set Level Name:
  • Option 1: Rename the extracted folder to world (deleting or backing up the old world folder first).
  • Option 2: Open server.properties and change level-name=world to level-name=custom_world.
  1. Start Server: Return to the Console and click Start.

Method B: Uploading via SFTP (FileZilla / WinSCP)

For large worlds exceeding 200 MB, SFTP provides the fastest, most reliable transfer:

  1. Connect to your server node using FileZilla with your SFTP credentials from the Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to your server root directory.
  3. Drag your local unzipped world directory directly into the remote server pane.
  4. Update level-name in server.properties to match your folder name.

3. Important Post-Upload Checks

  • Spawn Point: When joining your uploaded world, you may spawn in a location different from your local save. Use /setworldspawn to establish your preferred community spawn point.
  • Game Mode & Difficulty: Check server.properties to ensure gamemode (survival, creative, adventure) and difficulty (peaceful, easy, normal, hard) match your map's requirements.
  • Command Blocks: If you uploaded an adventure map with quest mechanics, ensure enable-command-block=true in server.properties.
